Call your representatives—don’t just sign petitions. This is Advice from DC Staffers.
Online petitions and emails are largely ignored or trashed. What truly influences lawmakers? Call volume (and immediacy). Every day, senior staff and elected officials receive a report on the top three most-called-about issues and the exact number of calls they received—broken down by zip code. This data informs their priorities and decisions.
Here’s how to make your voice count:
📞 Make 6-8 calls a day—2 each to your Senators (DC & local office hashtag#s) and Representative (DC & local office hashtag#s) (you might have 2 for home and work address). Governor and Attorney Generals can also file lawsuits on behalf of the state. Calls are tracked. Volume matters.
📌 Ask for the staffer in charge of the issue you're calling about. In DC, every major issue has an assigned staffer. Speaking directly to them increases impact.
📍 Always provide your zip code—even if they don’t ask. If you’re in a district that traditionally supports them, they’ll pay extra attention.
💬 Make it personal—Why does this issue affect you, your family, your job, your community? Personal stories leave lasting impressions.
The reality: Republican callers outnumber Democrat callers 4-to-1, and on hot-button issues, it’s closer to 11-to-1. Call volume can push legislators on the fence. If you care about an issue, your call can be the difference.
THIS IS URGENT: The indiscriminate firing of thousands of federal employees—including experts at the FAA, FDA, NIH, CDC, and even nuclear security staff—puts lives, the economy, and long-term healthcare at risk. This is not just about government jobs; it’s about safety, public health, and American competitiveness. There will not be functional agencies by May at the current rate/plan.
🔹 What can you do? Call. Every day. If you pay U.S. taxes and have a U.S. address, your voice matters. Make sure they hear it.
